How to Give Away Your Personal Power

For all of those who believe in personal empowerment, let me tell you something that is much quicker and easier to do.

Its much easier to give away your power.

As it happens often times we don’t even know it!

We give it to our family members, friends, relatives, loved ones, the list goes on!

So what is personal power anyways, you might be asking?

Well, its just this; power that you reserve for yourself.

Power that helps you feel empowered, important, fulfilled, loved, and understood.

Now, while all of those things might sound nice, let’s explore some major ways we give our power away:

  1. Family- So often we find ourselves in our family relationships were we are asked to give power away. Give up our preferences, our likes, dislikes, and give up negotiating for a win-win situation. Nope, in these relationships we have to give up our power to appease and please others! Give up your dreams so you can live mine! Sort of thing.
  2. Work - Never mind your own needs, this is work! Shut up that creative voice it isn’t welcome here. Is that independent thinking I see? Why can’t you just be normal, and clock your time like the rest of us! Don’t like what your manager says? Speak up and you’ll regret it!
  3. Romance - Love one sided relationships don’t you! Don’t you? Well, if you’re going to be in a relationship with me, you’ll have to give give give! I’ll just take from you, and remember, if you say something I don’t like, I’ll just replace you. Easy as pie.
  4. Children - Don’t even think about yourself here! Your children come first. In fact every child should come first! The adults are secondary, you must be at the whim of every one of your child’s desires. You don’t want to be seen as a bad parent do you? Buy them whatever they want so you won’t be!
  5. God - He is the big kahuna! Don’t you serve God? With every breath? Every word you speak must be for God! You don’t want to go to hell do you? Do you?

As you might have guessed, there are many people and ideas ready to usurp our personal power.

And most of the time, I feel it is done innocently, or at least subconsciously.

Do any of these situations sound familiar?

Will these same people love you even if you reclaim your own power?

Would you find out?

A Challenge

I would challenge you to observe the ways you give up your own personal power. When you see yourself doing it, say, “There it goes.”

Imagine how many times you’ll find yourself saying it.

Three? Four? A hundred? Maybe more?

Reclaim Your Power

After you notice how often you give your personal power away, in a gentle non obtrusive way, begin to reclaim it.

The easiest way to get your power back is to not give it out in the first place.

And for those other people who are used to taking the power you give them, simply say in your mind, “I have my power back now”

In time you will be able to heal the connection that created the power sieve in the first place. But the best way to begin this healing process is to stop giving your power away :)
